Culturally Competent and Trauma Informed Counseling |
I follow my clients lead and respect their boundaries when discussing cultural issues. I understand that I can never walk a mile in my client's shoes, but instead humbly walk beside them as an advocate, a learner, and a cheerleader. I welcome difficult conversations about inter-sectional identities (this is what therapy is all about!) and recognize that past and present, personal and inter-generational, often painful, but also joyful memories and reactions are informed by these experiences. I welcome diversity including all body sizes, abilities, races, ethnicities, socio-economic classes, sexual orientations, gender identities, religions, and documentation statuses. I am a life long learner whose undergraduate work focused on post-colonial history; I strive to always be on the lookout for new analysis on how the political informs the personal. When applicable, I enjoy working with my clients in their process of reclaiming their stories and separating out legacies of strength and survival from painful feelings of shame and blame.
